Bio

I am a cell biologist seeking to understand how sub-cellular structures and molecules define "cell types" or identity. This question is approached using planarians as an evolutionary lens to take a new look at topics relevant to human health and disease. My primary interest is an antenna-like structure on the cell surface called a cilium. My research focuses on the sensory aspect of cilia, specifically how cilia use environmental signals to coordinate biological decision making at multiple levels: molecular, cellular, developmental, and organismal. My favourite tool for this work is a microscope.
